2011 ACC Football Championship Prediction & Pick

The Atlantic Coast Conference in Football isn't quite what it is terms of being a powerhouse like College Basketball, but they still put up some contenders. While they haven't had a national championship contender in many years, and have struggled in bowl games lately, they do have a few teams that seem to be headed in the right direction. Nine of their 12 teams ended up in a bowl game last year, and they have two teams, Florida State and Virginia Tech who will head into the 2011 season ranked fairly high.

The ACC recently moved to the "two division" format, with the Atlantic and the Coastal divisions. We'll pick two teams from each that have a series possibility of competing for the ACC title, and then go on and pick the teams who we predict will advance to the championship game. First off though, let's take a look at the odds of each team to win the ACC.

As you can see, Florida State and Virginia Tech are the clear front runners, even though both teams have to replace their starting quarterbacks from last year. Miami has a quarterback situation of their own, trying to decide whether to start Jacory Harris or Stephen Morris. I think Miami is close to Virginia Tech overall, but has a tougher schedule as well. Clemson and North Carolina could be in for a tough year after losing a ton of players, and Clemson losing their quarterback, as well as their defensive star in Da'Quan Bowers. Boston College and NC State are both teams that could surprise you though. In reality Boston College's quarterback situation needs to improve, and they have a very tough schedule. NC State is returning a lot of starters; but the biggest issue there is that they lost star quarterback Russell Wilson. Maryland has a good quarterback in Danny O'Brien, and he could be a difference maker heading into this season. For the rest of the field though, they are going to need to make an incredible run to put a push on the top of the field.

It should be an interesting season in the ACC this year. I think that Florida State and North Carolina State are the top two teams out of the ACC Atlantic. And I think that Virginia Tech and Miami are the top two teams out of the Coastal. The reason that I'm taking NC State and Miami to put pressure on the top two teams, is mainly due to the teams below them who have some tough holes to fill in their lineups. NC State has to replace their quarterback, but Glennon came in on day 1 of his freshman year getting ready to prepare to be the starter at NC State, and he could surprise a few people.

  • ACC Atlantic Champion: Florida State
  • ACC Coastal Champion: Virginia Tech

I think the difference for the ACC Championship game comes down to which quarterback performs better between the two teams and I think E.J. Manuel from Florida State is going to be a strong starting quarterback in the ACC this year. I'm taking Florida State to win the ACC.

  • 2011 ACC Champion: Florida State
  • Pick: Florida State +175
