Now that the 2011 MLB All-Star Game is complete, players on every team will be looking to ensure their team gets one of the few spots in the MLB Playoffs. The 1st half of the season was awesome and there were a few surprises that we're going to talk about in this article. Online sportsbooks have been offering futures bets on the 2011 MLB World Series since the beginning of the season, but I never like placing futures bets until I get to see the teams perform during the 1st half of the season.
» 2011 MLB World Series Predictions
- Philadelphia Phillies +200
The Philadelphia Phillies are the favourites to win the 2011 World Series at the moment. Philadelphia is not only leading the NL East division, but they've also managed to post the best record in baseball before the All-Star break at 57-34. We all knew that the Phillies would be a top team this year due to their pitching rotation, which includes Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt. The offence currently ranks 19th in the league, which isn't that great. However, the Phillies average 4.2 RPG and on most nights 4+ runs is going to be enough for the Phillies pitching staff.
Boston Red Sox posted a 55-35 record before the All-Star break, which is good for 2nd place in MLB. The Red Sox have a 1-game lead on the Yankees right now and I think the Red Sox are the better team. Boston only has the 14th ranked pitching staff right now, but their league leading offence has helped them maintain the lead they have in the AL East. Boston added a ton of players to their roster this past off-season and I really like their chances this year to win the World Series.
The Yankees are only 1-game back of the Red Sox in the AL East and I have a feeling that these two teams will be fighting for the top position in the division until the last week of the season. New York Yankees always field one of the best teams in MLB due to their massive payroll, but I don't like them to win the 2011 World Series this year. In fact, I don't think the Yankees will even make it to the World Series this year.
- Pittsburgh Pirates +10,000
By this point of the season, the Pirates are usually already out of the playoff race, but the Pirates have been surprising everyone so far this season. Pittsburgh is 47-43 right now and only a game back in the NL Central, which means they definitely have a shot at making the playoffs this season. At +10,000 odds it's tempting to lay a very small wager on the Pirates to win the World Series, but I definitely don't think they'll win. I think the Pirates and their fans will be happy with a season above .500 and I really can't see them making a push for the playoffs during the 2nd half of the season unless their pitching is even better than it's already been the 1st half of the season.
- My Prediction - I really like the Phillies this year, which is a popular pick amongst bettors that are wagering on the 2011 World Series future bets. The odds are only +200, so at this point there isn't any value in betting on them. The Giants are currently sitting at +1000, which I think offers lots of value. The Giants are 3 games ahead of Arizona for the lead in the NL West and if they can add a big bat near the trade deadline I think they have an excellent chance at completing the repeat of last year's World Series victory.
