Detroit Lions vs New Orleans Saints Odds, Prediction, and Pick
There is nothing better than opening weekend of the NFL playoffs. This weekend features some of the best teams in the NFL battling for a chance to play the top two seeds in their division. Eight teams start in wild card weekend, and it will end with only four of the best teams in the NFL advancing to play the four top seeds in the entire NFL. This weekend has some big games, but that one that we are looking at is a match-up between a Detroit Lions team who shocked the world quite a bit this year by getting into the playoffs, and a New Orleans Saints team who is definitely a favorite to take down the 2012 Super Bowl. New Orleans gets the advantage from being at home and for having one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL on their side in Drew Brees here. The Saints are the three seed, while the Lions are six seed entering the 2012 playoffs.

There's not much of a better way to sum up the Saints than the name Drew Brees. Brees has been an absolute dominate force this season, as he broke Dan Marino's single season passing record, and was a huge leader for this team. The Saints also have an excellent receiving core that features tight end Jimmy Graham, and wide out Marques Colston, and one of the fastest running backs out there in Darren Sproles. The Saints finished the season with a 13-3 record, and look very similar to that same Saints team that won it all just a few years back.
As far as the Lions go, they are 10-6 overall, and have played some pretty impressive football this season. They are led by one of the best quarterback-wide out combos in the NFL in Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Johnson has proved to be almost unstoppable, and if the Lions are able to get hot, he could potentially cause some big issues for almost every team in these playoffs. Many people feel that the Lions are a major league sleeper this postseason, but they may be facing their biggest test in the first round against this Saints team.

These playoff match-ups are always tough to pick, and while the Saints definitely get an edge for being at home here, don't sleep on this Lions team. The team didn't put up this type of fight throughout the year to bow out early in these playoffs without any type of a fight. I think this one is going to be a shootout, and will be one of the closer games of the opening weekend in the NFL playoffs. Both teams have powerful offenses, and their defenses seem to be the weaker points of their team. I see big games from both quarterbacks, but the man who just broke a nice passing record this season getting the job done in the end. I'll take the Saints to win it here by a touchdown due to another strong fourth quarter performance from Drew Brees.

I can't say that I wasn't surprised by how big this line was when it was released. The Lions are a very good team, but they've definitely flown under the radar to this point. While I do think that the Saints are a better team, and that they will win the game, I think that the Lions are more than good enough to keep this game close and get the cover. So in the end, I'll be picking the Detroit Lions to cover this big spread of +10.5, and come close to pulling the upset at the end of the day.
