North Carolina Tar Heels vs Missouri Tigers Odds, Prediction, and Pick

The Missouri Tigers and North Carolina Tar Heels will be meeting in the Independence Bowl this year, after both teams completed slightly disappointing seasons, but finished bowl eligible. The Tigers had high hopes coming into the season, but ended up in the middle of the pack in a Big-12 that was by far the best conference in College Football. To sum it up, the Big-12 have eight teams going to bowl games, four teams who ended the year in the top 25, and eight teams who were ranked at one point during this season. The fact that the Tigers finished with 5-4 conference record in the Big-12 is actually fairly impressive taking all things into consideration. Missouri was led heavily by their running game with running back Henry Josey, who had 1168 yards and 9 touchdowns, and quarterback James Franklin who finished with a strong 839 yards and 13 touchdowns. Franklin also tossed for 20 touchdowns and 2733 yards as well.

Their opponent is the North Carolina Tar Heels, who were expected to have a solid year, but could never seem to get anything going, and faltered a bit at the end of the season. The problem for the Tar Heels is that they ended with a solid 7-5 record, but were only 3-5 in ACC play. The ACC is no where near as strong as the Big-12 is, and UNC will have a lot to prove in this game. The Heels lost four of their last six games, including being shut out by their rivals, the NC State Wolfpack. Giovani Bernard was the story for Carolina, as the freshman rushed for 1222 yards and 13 touchdowns, and should be a major factor in the bowl game. This game will be played on December 26 and will kick off at 5:00pm EST.

Don't underestimate the skill difference between the Big-12 and ACC this season. The Big-12 was dominant, while the ACC was definitely one of the most disappointing conferences of the year, and they never seemed to live up to the hype that surrounded them before the year. This one will be tough for the Tar Heels, as Missouri definitely knows how to play with the big boys. The Tigers hung with some of the best teams in the country, and I think that their offense and defense will simply overwhelm North Carolina in the end. I'll be taking Missouri to get a convincing win here, and take it down by ten in the end.

I expected Missouri to be favored by a bit more than this when the game was announced. It is also important to point out that the North Carolina Tar Heels have an interim head coach in there for this season, including the bowl game; and the team has already announced their new head coach. I think that this will play a role in how the Heels come out as well, and that Missouri will get the job done. I'm picking Missouri to get the win and also cover the -4 as well.
